As discussed at our last CANP speaker dinner program, there is a huge need in the valley. Please volunteer, even if you can only give an hour or two.

The flu season is imminent. For healthy individuals with proper precautions and hygiene the symptoms are transient and not life threatening. However, for certain vulnerable populations the flu can lead to catastrophic respiratory illness and death as we recently observed with the H1N1 virus. Vulnerable populations include the very young, the elderly, pregnant women and people with underlying chronic cardiopulmonary or immunologic illnesses. The medically indigent are also at risk for severe illness because they lack resources and access to public health education, vaccines, and primary care physicians and oftentimes live in substandard environments that help spread the virus. This year the Coachella Valley Volunteers In Medicine is partnering with the Riverside County Health Department in providing free influenza vaccines to our medically indigent elderly population. Our goal is to help mitigate the severity and spread of disease throughout the Coachella Valley. This will lead to better health and reduce emergency room visits.
Become a volunteer and join us in our efforts in serving our medically indigent populations and protect our elderly population from the influenza virus. Please call or email Bruce Yeager, and sign up for a vaccination event slot. We want four licensed nurses or physicians to give the vaccines and two "set up" volunteers for each event.
